The Department of chemistry is as old as the college. It has a faculty of 6 teachers 3 among whom are doctorates. They are committed and dedicated to the cause of promoting the study of chemistry as a science. The Department has been regularly organizing seminars, workshops, intercollegiate quiz competitions, field trips and industrial tours. Faculty members have several research publications to their credit. Two teachers have authored text books in chemistry, published by Telugu Academy for B.Sc. Chemistry students. The Department has organized successfully an inter-collegiate Quiz competition for undergraduate students. It has a well-equipped research laboratory and a separate instrumentation room with a latest version of double beam UV-Spectrophotometer. Arranging of guest lecturers for undergraduate students is a regular phenomenon. The department conducted the following seminars;
“Role of chemistry in modern life”
1. A Two day State level seminar on “Green Chemistry” was organized in the year 2006. The state level seminar was a grand success where faculty and students of majority of the colleges, university & its constituent colleges participated
2. A One day State level seminar on “Plastic boon or bane” in the year 2010. a state level seminar was a grand success where about 300 professors, lecturers and students attended the seminar.
3. A Two day State level seminar on “The Role of chemistry in Modern life” in the year 2012 was a grand success professors, lecturers and students attended the seminar.
4. A One day State level seminar on “Current Trends and Prospects at Interface of Chemistry and Botany” in the year 2015 was a grand success professors, lecturers and students attended the seminar.
5. This academic year we are organized a one day National Seminar on the “Role of Chemistry in Earth and Environmental Sciences” on 22nd January, 2018 was a grand success professors, lecturers and students attended the seminar.
The department has conducted several field trips to NGRI, IICT, CCMB, IIP, ICRISAT, Chemical and Cement industries etc Institutions like NGRI play a pivotal role in the exploration of hydrocarbons, minerals and ground water resources in addition to studies in engineering, Geophysics, Seismology, Geo-dynamics and Geo- environment. The department organized an industrial visit on 15th November 2013 to Doddabetta Tea factory at ooty, Tamilnadu. History of tea and the different stages of tea processing like Withering, Crushing, Cutting/ tearing/ curling, shaping, fermentation, drying, cleaning and grading were explained to students.
